SUMMARY:Asylum Monologues @ Ben & Jerry's Cone Together Manchester: Welcome not Walls
DESCRIPTION:Be & Jerry’s will be hosting a Wall of welcome messages in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester this weekend. Ice&Fire will be performing readings of Asylum Monologues 1-3pm on Saturday 22nd June \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2126481530783221/ \nWe need a society where everyone feels welcome. And\, right now\, there are too many people being shut out from our communities. Which got us thinking\, it doesn’t need to be this way… \nSo\, along with some friends at national and local refugee organisations as part of Refugee Week\, Ben & Jerry’s are building a wall\, with a bit of a difference – to welcome\, not divide. \nWe’ll be asking our fans to cone together and decorate our wall with messages of solidarity and welcome for people who are seeking safety. \nPlus\, our wall will be complete with a celebration of refugee-led music\, arts\, spoken word set to bring people together through what unites and not divides us. And of course\, we’ll be bringing a scoop or two of our chunky and swirly Fairtrade ice cream. It’s time to raise a paintbrush (and a spoon)! \nThe wall of welcome will be heading to Manchester on 21-22nd June for Refugee Week\, so stop down and see us between 9-6pm on either day. \nPeople seeking asylum are our co-workers\, neighbours and friends but every day people are being shut out\, unable to participate fully in society. There’s never been a more important time to stand against regressive policies which seek to divide us. Because what’s sweeter than people coming together\, to say “we’re all equal\, and we’re all welcome here”.

SUMMARY:Arming The World @ Brighton\, Ship Street
DESCRIPTION:Unmasking Britain’s shadowy arms trade\nFree performances: 12 noon and 2pm: 22nd June 2019 \nIn the words of the #ArmingtheWorld team:\n“In the UK\, we do many things well. Stately homes\, the James Bond franchise\, fish and chips and tax havens. But there’s one important source of national pride that is often overlooked. Triumphing over past decade\, the UK has been the second largest exporter of arms in the world (damn you USA!)\, with over 300 British companies involved in the trade. Our stunning weapons have been deployed across the globe and we want to help you get to know them a bit better.” (Sept 2017) \nThis show “…..brings the shadowy world of our government’s involvement into arms trading out into the light of day”\nhttp://www.armingtheworld.co.uk/\nBrought to you by Brighton Against the Arms Trade.

SUMMARY:Asylum Monologues @ Saint Margarets House
DESCRIPTION:Venue: Hall behind the Gallery Cafe at 21 Old Ford Road \n6:30pm-9:30pm | Donation Entry: £5 Solidarity\, £2/3 Standard\, £0 Broke \n“This waiting for the Home Office to decide – me\, I always say that it is a diplomatic form of torture. They are not raping us\, they are not burning us with cigarettes\, they are not hitting us with guns\, but they are torturing us mentally\, and that’s the worst. Because – my scars\, they heal. It was painful but if I touch them now\, I feel no pain. But the torture that is mental – this is constant…” \nThe first script created for ice&fire’s Actors for Human Rights project\, Asylum Monologues is a first-hand account of the UK’s asylum system in the words of people who have experienced it read by actors. The Actors for Human Rights programme was founded in 2006 and is a network of more than 700 professional actors across the UK who are dedicated to drawing public attention to human rights concerns\, responding to requests for rehearsed readings of our documentary plays and can go anywhere at any time. \nice&fire explores human rights stories through performance\, putting human rights at the core of everything they do to make accessible theatre for a wide range of audiences across the UK. The reading will be followed by a Q&A Panel Discussion. \n‘This was not what I expected. I was expecting some kind of inauthentic moralising verbatim theatre experience. The acting (in Asylum Monologues) was delicate\, minimal\, allowing the words to speak for themselves. Although we know it must go on\, it’s still shocking to hear the first-hand accounts of people devoured by the heartless machine of bureaucracy. This was brave\, honest\, close to the bone.’ – OXFORD THEATRE REVIEW \nEvent details here

SUMMARY:This Is Who I Am @ Kala Sangam\, Bradford
DESCRIPTION:This Is Who I Am\n \n“Then they separated us. We tried to say no\, we applied for asylum as a couple. They say we don’t have any civil evidence that we are a couple. And we’re like “how can we show you any civil evidence if homosexuality is forbidden in my country?”\n\nFirst-hand accounts of LGBT+ people seeking asylum in the UK about their experiences in their own country and on arrival in the UK\, addressing the particular challenges they face. Read by members of the Actors For Human Rights Network. \n“The monologues simply but powerfully illustrate the pain\, hurdles and humiliation they encounter and are given an unadorned reading… the accounts speak for themselves and allow a light to be shone on the plight of a particular group of refugees that are ignored or met with incomprehension or minimisation of what they go through.” Audience Member \n\nThis is an open event\, details TBC
